By now, I’m certain you realize I tend to love activities that lend themselves to enhance one’s mental acuity. (Wow! Listen to them there college type words) This weekend we discovered how to make learning virtually painless by visiting the Fernbank Museum In Atlanta.
The Fernbank Museum of Natural History, in Atlanta, Georgia, offers exhibitions and programming about natural history that is meant to entertain as well as educate the public. They offer many online-resources for families and teachers. Have a child involved in scouting? Fernbank even has resources to help them earn badges and belt loops.
If your kids are like mine were then they will LOVE the Giants of the Mesozoic, on display in the atrium of Fernbank Museum, features a 123-foot long Argentinosaurus (the largest dinosaur ever classified) as well as a Giganotosaurus.
My favorite exhibit was the permanent exhibition, A Walk Through Time in Georgia, which tells the two-fold story of Georgia’s natural history and the development of the planet. In this exhibit you travel from the Appalachian Mountains to the Okefenokee Swamp to coastal barrier islands.
We also loved the Gecko Exhibit. Now if you just thought that Geckos were green and were spokesreptiles for insurance companies you will definitely want to visit the Geckos: Tails to Toepads exhbit. Explore the amazing world of geckos – from shadowy nighttime hunters with unbelievable camouflage, to neon-colored nectar eaters that scamper around in daylight.
All that learning isn’t just limited to what’s under the roof. Fernbank Forest, is an undisturbed, mature mixed hardwood forest with labeled trees, shrubs, ferns, and wild flowers.
Visitors to Fernbank Forest can see firsthand the primeval beauty of forestland as early explorers and southern Native Americans did hundreds of years ago. Trees, shrubs, wildflowers and ferns are labeled for visitors. Animals, such as squirrels, chipmunks, crows, woodpeckers, blue jays, box turtles and snakes, live undisturbed in their natural environment
We happened to have scheduled our visit for Fernbank Museum’s annual Reptile Day. Visitors were given an opportunity to get up-close with dozens of lizards, snake and turtles. Members of the Georgia Herpetological Society were on hand to answer questions and educate visitors about the importance of these exceptional animals.
We also took in a Film at the IMAX Theater where films are presented on a screen measuring five stories high and 72 feet. We chose to see the film Arabia which allowed us to eExperience this region of the world as it was in the past, and how it has evolved in modern day. I would love to come back to see Roar: Lions of the Kalahari which begins July 30th.
This Sunday, join Fernbank for a variety of games, treats and bug-themed activities during the Bug Out Festival from noon to 3:30PM.
Fun activities include Entomology Lab, learn more about insects and other invertebrates through a variety of hands-on activities; Radio Disney Street Team, enjoy music, games and prizes with our friends from Radio Disney AM 590; Bunch o’ Bugs Counting Contest, guess correctly and you might win a great prize; Free Ice Cream, courtesy of Bruster’s Real Ice Cream, chill out with free ice cream provided by Bruster’s Real Ice Cream (While supplies last) and many more fun kid-friendly activities.

The Butterfly Exhibit sounds great. When we lived in FL I had a butterfly garden. It was such fun to watch their life cycle.
